About
What can design offer in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous?
Under the title «Interactive and Playful — Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts», the exhibition presented at Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) offered an opportunity for reflection and mutual exchange. The Department of Design from Zurich University of the Arts provided a hypothesis for a new understanding of design that could be experienced playfully and interactively, contrary to the common formula of the established design of mostly aesthetically exaggerated analogue artefacts.
Design as understood by the Department deals systemically with questions of ecology, technology, society and economy — works with new possibilities of technical innovation and understands aesthetics as its own language, which makes values, contents and use accessible. «Critical & Speculative Design» but also «Design Thinking» and «Strategic Design» were introduced in the exhibition as essential methods and tools. This understanding of design was new in Hong Kong and was prototypically put up for discussion within the exhibition and was accompanied by the lecture «Shifting Design» as part of the Master Lecture Series.
The exhibition was financially, organisationally and medially supported by HKDI and FDFA, with whom the Department of Design has established a long-term collaboration.
